Where surges actually come from
Lightning gets the blame, and it deserves some of it. Florida records more cloud-to-ground strikes than any other state, and a strike does not have to hit your house to matter. A hit on a nearby pole couples energy straight into the lines feeding your street.
Most surges are smaller and far more frequent than that. Utility switching, a transformer restoring after an outage, and a neighbour's well pump cycling all put brief spikes onto the line.
Some of it starts inside your own walls. Air conditioning compressors and pool pumps are the usual sources. Every time a large motor stops, it dumps energy back into the circuit it sits on.
Why one big spike is not the real threat
A direct strike destroys things outright, and everybody understands that failure. The quieter problem is cumulative.
Small surges degrade electronics gradually. The power supply in a television, a variable-speed pool pump or an inverter air conditioner takes hundreds of small hits over a few years, and its components lose margin each time.
Then one ordinary Tuesday it fails, and nothing about that day looks unusual. That is why appliances seem to die for no reason. The reason accumulated over three years.
How layered surge protection works
The first layer sits at your meter or your main panel. A whole-home device clamps the large stuff coming in from outside and shunts it to ground before it reaches a branch circuit.
The second layer sits at the outlet. Good point-of-use strips catch what gets past the first layer and handle surges that start inside the house, which the panel device cannot see.
Both layers matter. A panel device alone leaves your equipment exposed to everything the compressor generates. Strips alone let a big event walk straight through them.
What the numbers on the box mean
Surge current rating, printed in kiloamps, describes how much energy the device can absorb. For a whole-home unit in Florida we fit 50kA or better, and often more on coastal properties.
Let-through voltage, sometimes called clamping voltage, describes how much still gets past. Lower is better. A device that clamps at 600 volts is doing far less for you than one that clamps at 400.
Response time matters least of the three, because any decent modern device acts in nanoseconds. Pay attention to the first two numbers instead.
Installing surge protection on your panel
The work itself is short, usually an hour or two. The device mounts at or beside the main panel and connects through a dedicated breaker, with leads kept as short and straight as possible.
Lead length is not a detail. Every extra inch of conductor adds impedance, and impedance raises the voltage your equipment actually sees during an event. A neatly installed device outperforms a sloppily installed identical one.
Grounding is the other half of it. A surge device can only send energy somewhere if the grounding electrode system is sound, so we check the rods and the bonding before we fit anything.
What it protects, and what it does not
A panel device covers everything fed by that panel. Air conditioning, the pool equipment, the range, the well pump and every receptacle in the house all sit behind it.
It does not cover what comes in on other lines. Cable, satellite and telephone lines all enter the house separately, and a surge can ride in on any of them. Those need their own protection at the point of entry.
It also does not make a direct strike survivable. Nothing does. What it does is turn the far more common near-miss from an expensive day into a non-event.
Warranties, and reading them honestly
Most manufacturers attach a connected equipment warranty to whole-home devices, often quoted in tens of thousands of dollars. Those are real, and they are also narrow.
Nearly all of them require professional installation by a licensed electrician, a permit where one applies, and proof that the grounding met code. Self-installed devices are usually excluded outright.

When to replace the device you already have
Surge devices wear out by design. They spend their life absorbing energy, and each event uses some of their capacity.
Nearly all of them have an indicator light or a small window that reports status. Green means it is still protecting. Anything else means it has done its job and is now decorative.
Check it after any significant storm and at least once a year. We check it as part of any other work at your panel, at no extra cost, because it takes four seconds and people never remember to look.
Storm season, and doing this before June
Hurricane season runs from the start of June to the end of November, and the busiest stretch usually falls between August and October.
The worst time to think about this is during a named storm, when supply gets tight and every electrician in the county already has a full week booked.
Spring is quiet. Panels are accessible, permits move quickly, and we can look at the grounding without standing in the rain. If you are going to do it at all, that is when it costs the least and takes the least of your time. Book it alongside anything else you already need at the panel and the visit pays for itself twice over.
Insurance, claims and what adjusters ask
After a storm we do a lot of damage assessments, and the pattern is consistent. Adjusters want to know whether protection was in place, whether a licensed contractor installed it, and whether the grounding met code at the time.
Some Florida carriers now offer a small premium credit for whole-home surge protection, in the same way they do for wind mitigation features. It is worth asking yours directly, because the credit is rarely advertised.
Keep the invoice, the permit if one was pulled and the device registration together with your policy documents. Claims move faster when that folder already exists.
What we install, and what it costs
For most houses we fit a panel-mounted device from a major manufacturer, sized well above the minimum rating, on a dedicated breaker with short leads. Materials and labor together usually land in the low hundreds when we are already at the panel for other work.
As a standalone visit it costs a little more, because the trip and the panel shutdown are the same regardless of how small the device is.
Meter-mounted units are the other option and some utilities offer them on a monthly lease. They protect against the big external events but sit further from your equipment, so we generally prefer a panel device with point-of-use strips behind it.
A short honest summary
Surge protection is one of the few electrical upgrades that costs very little and reliably pays for itself in a state like this one. A single replaced air conditioning control board usually exceeds the whole installed price.
It is not magic and it will not survive a direct strike. What it does is remove the slow, invisible damage that shortens the life of everything with a circuit board in it, which in a modern house is nearly everything.
