Recessed cans, and how many a room really needs

The usual mistake is too many. A grid of a dozen four-inch cans in a modest living room gives you an airport terminal, not a room you want to sit in.

A better starting point is layers. General light from a few well-placed cans, task light where you actually work, and something soft at the edges of the room. That mix reads as comfortable in a way a uniform grid never does.

Spacing follows ceiling height. On a standard eight-foot ceiling, cans roughly four to five feet apart cover general lighting well. Push them closer only where there is a counter or a desk underneath.

How our lighting installation work is sequenced

On a remodel with the ceiling open, the order is simple. We lay out the positions in chalk, walk them with you, then cut, run and mount before the drywall goes back.

In a finished house it runs the other way. We locate joists and existing circuits first, then cut only where we know we can get wire to. Remodel-rated housings clip into the drywall without needing attic access above every hole.

Either way we test the layout with the fixtures in place before we close anything up. Moving a can after the ceiling is patched and painted is expensive, and looking at it lit is the only reliable way to know it is right.

Colour temperature, and why your kitchen looks blue

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin, and it is the difference between light that feels like a lamp and light that feels like a car park. Around 2700K is warm and yellow. 3000K is warm but cleaner. 4000K is noticeably cool, and 5000K reads blue-white indoors.

For living areas and bedrooms we normally fit 2700K or 3000K. Kitchens and garages often go 3500K or 4000K because you want to see what you are doing.

The other number worth caring about is CRI, which describes how honestly a light renders colour. Anything under 90 makes skin, food and paint look slightly wrong. Good fixtures publish it. Cheap ones tend not to.

Dimmers, and the flicker problem

Most LED flicker traces back to a dimmer designed for incandescent bulbs. Old dimmers expect a large resistive load. An LED draws a fraction of that, so the dimmer never sees enough current to behave.

The fix is a dimmer rated for LED, matched to the fixtures. We keep several on the van because compatibility varies by brand, and the honest way to solve it is to try one and watch the light.

Low-end dimming is where cheap fixtures give themselves away. A good LED runs smoothly down to five percent. A poor one drops out entirely somewhere around twenty and flickers on the way there.

Under-cabinet, cove and the light you notice most

Under-cabinet lighting changes a kitchen more than any ceiling fixture does, because it puts light on the surface you actually use. Linear LED strips or thin bars mount at the front edge of the cabinet, not the back, so the light lands on the counter rather than the backsplash.

Cove and toe-kick lighting do a different job. They wash a surface and give a room a soft floor of light at night, which is what most people want at eleven at night rather than a ceiling full of cans.

Both want their own switch and usually their own dimmer. Ganging them with the general lighting defeats the point of having them.

Smart lighting without the regret

Smart lighting divides into two approaches. Smart bulbs are easy and require no wiring change, but every switch in the house has to stay on for them to work, which confuses guests and children.

Smart switches are the better long-term answer. The wall control still works as a wall control, and the automation sits behind it. The catch is that they need a neutral conductor at the switch box, and many Florida houses built before the 1990s do not have one.

We check for a neutral before you buy anything. Where there is none, there are switches that work without it, and there is always the option of pulling one during other work in that wall.

Outdoor and security lighting at the house

Soffit lighting is the cleanest way to light the front of a house, because the fixtures disappear during the day. Downlights spaced along the eave wash the wall and the entry without glare in anyone's eyes.

Motion sensors belong on side yards and back doors rather than the front. A front porch light that snaps on every time a car passes is a nuisance you will disable within a month.

Everything outside needs weather-rated fixtures, in-use covers on receptacles and ground-fault protection. Near the coast, add stainless or marine-grade finishes to that list, because standard ones corrode within a couple of seasons.

Fixing lighting somebody else installed

A large share of our lighting installation calls are corrections. Cans cut too close to a joist so they sit crooked. Housings not rated for insulation contact, buried in blown-in attic insulation, cooking themselves and shortening lamp life.

We also find a lot of undersized boxes carrying too many conductors, and fixtures hung off boxes that were never meant to take weight.

None of it is unusual and most of it is quick to put right. We photograph what we find above the ceiling so you can see the reason for the repair rather than taking our word for it.

Planning a whole-house lighting project

Start with the rooms you use at night. Most people over-plan the guest bedroom and under-plan the kitchen and the main living space, which is where all the hours actually go.

Budget by circuit rather than by fixture. Adding twelve cans to an existing circuit is inexpensive. Adding twelve cans plus three new switch legs and a dimmer bank is a different number, and the wiring is the part that costs.

If you are painting or replacing ceilings anyway, do the lighting first. Patching is cheap while the room is already torn up and expensive once it is finished.

Lighting that has to survive salt air

On the barrier islands and anywhere within a mile or so of open water, fixture finish predicts lifespan more than fixture price does. Powder-coated steel blisters. Ordinary aluminum pits and chalks.

Marine-grade brass and 316 stainless cost more and last several times longer. Solid copper is the other option, and it weathers to a patina many people prefer anyway.

The same logic applies to what nobody sees. Stainless screws, sealed connections and in-use covers on every outdoor receptacle are the difference between a system you service occasionally and one you replace in four years.

Getting a quote that means something

Send photos of the room, the ceiling and the existing switches. Tell us the ceiling height and whether there is attic access above. Those three things let us give a real number rather than a range.

For bigger projects we walk the house and mark positions in chalk before quoting. That costs you an hour and it removes almost all of the guesswork on both sides.

We quote fixtures and labor separately. Plenty of customers buy their own fixtures and just want the wiring done, and that is a perfectly sensible way to run the job. One request, though: have everything on site before we arrive. A single missing trim ring turns a finished room into a return visit, and return visits are the most expensive hour of any lighting installation.
