Low voltage or line voltage?

Nearly all residential landscape lighting here runs at twelve volts through a transformer. Low voltage cable can sit in a shallow trench, it is safe to handle, and adding a fixture later takes minutes rather than a permit.

Line voltage at 120 volts still has its place. Tall tree lighting, long runs across a large property and commercial sites all favour it, because voltage drop over distance is far less of a problem.

The trade-off is installation. Line voltage needs conduit, proper burial depth and an inspection. For a normal residential yard, low voltage is almost always the right answer.

The techniques that actually make a yard look good

Uplighting puts a fixture at the base of a palm or an oak and throws light up the trunk. It is the single most effective thing you can do to a South Florida front yard after dark.

Path lighting does a different job. Done well it is a series of soft pools of light rather than a runway of identical fixtures every four feet.

Wall washing and grazing light the house itself. Washing gives an even glow across a flat wall. Grazing sits close to the surface and rakes across it, which brings out texture on coral stone or brick.

Downlighting from high in a tree is the subtle one, and it is our favourite. It mimics moonlight through branches and it looks like nothing was installed at all.

Designing landscape lighting before buying anything

Start by walking the property at night with a flashlight. Point it at things and see what looks good. That ten-minute exercise tells you more than any catalogue will.

Then decide what the lighting is for. Security, curb appeal and usability after dark are three different goals, and they put fixtures in different places.

Restraint is what separates a good scheme from a bad one. Lighting every plant flattens the yard. Choosing six or eight features and leaving the rest dark creates depth.

Fixtures that survive this climate

Salt air, sprinkler water, fertiliser and eight months of heat are brutal on outdoor fixtures. Cheap aluminum path lights typically fail within two or three seasons here.

Solid brass and copper are what we install. They cost more at the start and they last, weathering to a soft patina instead of corroding through.

Stainless steel works too, though only marine-grade 316 near the water. The 304 grade sold in most big-box stores pits within a year on a coastal property.

Transformers, wire and voltage drop

The transformer sizing rule is simple. Add the wattage of every fixture, then choose a transformer with meaningful headroom above it so you can expand later.

Wire gauge decides how far you can go before the light at the end of the run gets dim and yellow. Longer runs need heavier cable, and we size it against the actual layout rather than a rule of thumb.

Where a run is genuinely long, a hub layout beats a daisy chain. Several shorter runs from a central point keep voltage consistent across every fixture, so the last light looks like the first.

Controls, timers and getting the hours right

A photocell turns the system on at dusk. That part is easy and it never needs adjusting through the year.

Turning it off is the part people get wrong. Running until dawn wastes energy and shortens lamp life, and nobody is looking at the yard at four in the morning. Most of our customers settle on dusk until around eleven.

Smart controllers add zones and scheduling from a phone, which is worth it if you entertain outdoors or travel often. They also let you run the path lights late and the feature lighting early, which is a nicer result than one switch for everything.

Colour temperature outdoors

Warm light flatters planting and architecture. We fit 2700K on most residential work, and it looks natural against stucco, coral stone and green foliage.

Cooler light around 4000K reads as harsh outdoors, and it makes plants look grey. It has a place on security lighting at the back of a commercial building and almost nowhere else at a house.

Consistency matters as much as the number. Mixing colour temperatures across a single elevation is the fastest way to make a good installation look accidental.

Security lighting without annoying the neighbours

Bright floodlights are less effective than people assume. Glare creates deep shadow next to it, and a bright light with a dark edge is easier to hide in than an evenly lit yard.

Layered lower-level light works better. Fixtures spread around the property, aimed down, remove the shadows without blinding anyone.

Aim and shield everything. Light spilling into a neighbour's bedroom window causes complaints, and many HOAs and municipalities have rules about it. Getting the aim right at install time avoids all of that.

Pools, docks and water features

Anything near a pool has its own set of rules about distance from the water, bonding and ground-fault protection. This is not an area to improvise in, and it is one of the more common places we find unsafe work by others.

Dock and seawall lighting has to handle constant salt exposure, and fixtures need to be rated for the location rather than simply weather-resistant.

Underwater fixtures in ponds and fountains need low voltage and a ground-fault device without exception. We inspect these on every service visit, because water finds its way into an enclosure eventually.

Maintenance, and what goes wrong

Landscape lighting is not fit-and-forget, though it is close. Plants grow, and a fixture perfectly aimed at a young palm ends up lighting a trunk nobody can see three years later.

Lenses cloud with mineral deposits from sprinkler water. Fixtures get knocked out of aim by lawn crews. Connections corrode where a cheap connector was used.

We offer an annual visit that re-aims, cleans, replaces failed lamps and checks connections. Most systems need an hour or two a year, and it makes an enormous difference to how the yard looks.

What it costs

Price scales with fixture count and fixture quality far more than with labor. A modest front-yard scheme of eight to twelve brass fixtures with a transformer and a controller is the usual starting point.

Trenching cost depends on what is in the way. Open beds are quick. Established sod, paver walkways and driveways are slower, and boring under a driveway is its own line item.

We quote in zones so you can phase it. Front elevation first, then the pool deck, then the side yards is a common order, and the transformer gets sized at the start for the whole plan.

Repairing a system somebody else installed

We take on repair work on existing systems regularly. The usual faults are corroded connections, a failed transformer, buried cable damage from landscaping, and fixtures nobody has cleaned in five years.

Where the original fixtures are worth keeping, we keep them. Where they are the cheap kind that fails annually, we will say so and price the replacement alongside the repair.
