The three wiring types we replace most
Aluminum branch circuits went into a huge number of Florida houses between roughly 1965 and 1973. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, so connections loosen over years of heating and cooling. Loose connections arc. That is the failure mode, and it happens at outlets and switches rather than inside the walls.
Knob and tube is older and rarer here, but it turns up in the historic pockets of Delray Beach and West Palm Beach. It has no ground conductor at all, and its cloth insulation goes brittle.
Then there is early plastic-sheathed cable with cloth outer jacket, common in the 1950s and 1960s. The copper inside is usually fine. The insulation crumbles the moment anyone disturbs it, which makes any future work risky.
Do you need a full home rewiring, or just part of one?
Full rewiring means every branch circuit gets replaced back to a new panel. It is the right answer for aluminum wiring throughout, for knob and tube, and for houses where the insulation is failing everywhere.
Partial work is often enough. If only the kitchen and bath circuits are original, or only the additions are suspect, we replace those and leave sound copper alone. A safety inspection tells us which case you are in.
There is also a middle option for aluminum specifically. Copper pigtails installed with approved connectors at every device address the connection problem without opening walls across the whole house. It is cheaper, it is recognized, and for some houses it is the sensible call.
How we get wire through a Florida house
Most homes here are concrete block with no basement, so we work from the attic down and through interior partitions. That is the part that surprises people: a lot of a rewire happens above your head, not in your walls.
Where we do have to open drywall, we cut small, regular patches rather than long channels. We photograph behind every opening before we close it.
Attic work in July is brutal, so crews start early and take the hottest hours off the clock. It affects scheduling more than it affects price.
Living in the house while it happens
Most customers stay. We work room by room and keep power on everywhere except the area under active work. Kitchens and bedrooms get sequenced so you always have a functioning one.
A typical three-bedroom single-story rewire runs one to two weeks depending on access. Two-story homes and additions with odd framing take longer.
Expect dust. We tape off, we run air scrubbers in occupied areas, and we clean daily, but drilling into fifty-year-old block makes a mess no matter how careful the crew is.
What the code requires now that it did not before
Modern rewiring brings a house up to current requirements, and those have moved a long way. Arc-fault protection is required across most living areas. Ground-fault protection covers kitchens, baths, garages, outdoors and laundry. Tamper-resistant receptacles are standard.
Circuit counts have gone up too. Kitchens need dedicated small-appliance circuits, the bathroom needs its own, and the laundry cannot share. A 1962 house typically had eight circuits. The same house rewired today usually lands somewhere between twenty and thirty.
All of it gets permitted and inspected. We schedule a rough inspection before the walls close and a final once the devices are in.
Insurance, and why underwriters ask
Florida insurers have tightened up. Many now require a four-point inspection on older homes, and aluminum branch wiring is one of the specific things they look for. Some carriers decline outright. Others will write the policy but only after remediation.

What a home rewiring costs, and why estimates vary so much
Square footage sets the baseline, but access sets the price. A single-story house with a walkable attic and drywall ceilings is the straightforward version. A two-story with a finished second floor, or a flat roof with almost no attic space, is a different job at the same square footage.
Fixture count matters more than people expect. Every switch, receptacle, fan and can light is a device to terminate and a box to set, so a house with generous outlet counts costs more than a sparse one of the same size.
Finish level drives the tail end. Patching and texturing to match a smooth modern wall is slower than patching a knockdown texture, and matching an older plaster finish is slower still.

What we do about the things we find inside the walls
Opening up a fifty-year-old house turns up surprises. Junction boxes buried behind drywall with no access. Splices made with tape instead of connectors. Circuits that were extended into an addition by whoever owned the house in 1994.
None of that is unusual and none of it is a reason to panic. We document what we find, show you photos and price the corrections before we do them.
Occasionally we find something that has to be fixed immediately, like an ungrounded metal box feeding a bathroom. We will call you the same hour rather than leaving it until the end-of-week update.
After the rewire
You get a labeled panel, a permit that closed out cleanly, and a circuit map showing which breaker feeds which room. Keep that with the house documents.
Most customers notice two things immediately. Lights stop dimming when the AC starts, because the circuits are no longer sharing capacity they never had. And breakers stop nuisance tripping, because the load is spread across a sensible number of circuits instead of four overloaded ones.
The less visible benefit is the one that matters most. A rewired house removes the single largest electrical fire risk an older Florida home carries, and it does it in a way an insurer will recognise on paper.
How to tell whether your house is a candidate
Start with the year it was built. Anything from the late 1960s or early 1970s in Palm Beach or St. Lucie County is worth checking for aluminum branch circuits.
Then pull one receptacle cover, with the breaker off. Aluminum conductor is silver rather than copper-colored, and the cable jacket is often stamped with the word aluminum or the abbreviation AL. That single look answers the question for most houses.
Warm switch plates, outlets that have stopped holding a plug firmly, and a faint smell of hot plastic near a device are all reasons to stop investigating yourself and call somebody.
If you would rather not open anything, we check it during a safety inspection and give you the answer in writing. Plenty of people book that first and decide about home rewiring afterwards. That is a sensible order to do it in, because the inspection tells you whether you are looking at a whole-house job or a handful of circuits.
One last thing worth saying plainly. A house with aluminum branch wiring is not on fire and is not about to be. The risk builds slowly over decades at the connection points, which is exactly why it is worth dealing with on your schedule rather than on an emergency call at ten at night.
