Why South Florida panels wear out early
Salt air is hard on metal. Homes near the water in Palm Beach and St. Lucie County sit in a fine mist that carries inland for miles, and it settles on every bus bar and breaker lug inside a panel. Over time that film turns into corrosion. Corrosion adds resistance, resistance adds heat, and heat is what cooks a panel from the inside.
Humidity does its own damage. A panel mounted on an exterior wall breathes with the weather, so moist air moves in during the day and condenses at night. After ten or fifteen summers you often find rust streaks down the back of the can and chalky white deposits on the neutral bar.
Then there is load. Nobody asked a house wired in 1985 to run two air handlers, a pool pump, a tankless water heater and a car charger at once. The panel did not fail because someone built it badly. It failed because the house it serves is no longer the house it was sized for.
How an electrical panel upgrade actually goes
First we do a load calculation. That is the arithmetic behind the whole job. It decides whether you need 150 amps, 200 amps, or a subpanel instead of a full service change. To get there we walk the house, count the fixed appliances, measure the square footage and check what the utility feeds you now.
Next comes the permit. We file it, we book the inspection, and we line up the disconnect with Florida Power and Light so nobody is guessing on the morning of the work.
On install day the power goes off. We pull the old can, set the new one, land every circuit on a labeled breaker, drive new ground rods if the existing ones are undersized, and bond the water line. Most single-panel jobs run four to eight hours. Then the inspector comes out, the utility reconnects, and in most cases you have power back the same day.
What drives the price up or down
Three things move the number more than anything else. The first is where the panel lives. A flush-mounted panel in a finished interior wall costs more than a surface-mounted one in a garage, because someone has to open the drywall and close it again.
The second is the service entrance. If the meter can, the mast, and the conductors from the weatherhead are all original, we normally replace them along with the panel. That is a bigger job than dropping breakers into a new box.
The third is what turns up once the cover is off. Aluminum branch circuits, missing grounds and double-tapped breakers all have to clear before the job will pass. We would rather show you those on the estimate than surprise you on inspection day, so we photograph the inside of your panel during the free visit and walk through it with you.
Permits and inspections in Palm Beach and St. Lucie County
Florida requires a permit for a service change. There is no version of this job that skips it, and an unpermitted panel will surface later during a home sale or an insurance inspection.
Each municipality runs its own building department, so the forms and the scheduling windows differ between, for example, Boca Raton and Port Saint Lucie. We deal with that part. You do not need to stand at a counter or work out which revision of the Florida Building Code applies to your house.
After the inspector signs off, we leave you the permit number and the closed-out paperwork. Keep it. Insurers ask for it during four-point inspections, and buyers ask for it at closing.
Do you need 200 amps, or is 150 enough?
Most three-bedroom houses in this area land comfortably on 200 amps, and that is what we install by default. It is not because bigger is automatically better. It is because the cost gap between 150 and 200 is small during the work. That same gap gets painful later if you decide to add a car charger.
There are real cases for staying smaller. A one-bedroom condo with gas heat and gas cooking may never need more than 100 amps, and the association may not allow a larger feeder anyway.
There are also cases for going bigger. If you plan to add a standby generator, a second AC system, and a Level 2 charger in the same year, we will talk about 320-amp service and a pair of 200-amp panels. The load calculation decides that, not a rule of thumb.
Panel brands worth replacing on sight
Some panels are worth replacing regardless of how they look. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels have a long documented history of breakers that fail to trip under fault. Zinsco panels are known for bus bars that melt around the breaker stab. Challenger and Pushmatic panels went out of production decades ago. Finding a replacement breaker for one now means hunting for used parts of unknown history.
If you own one of these and your insurer has not asked about it yet, they probably will. Several Florida carriers now decline to write or renew policies on homes running Federal Pacific or Zinsco equipment.

What you are left with when we finish
A new panel with every circuit labeled in plain language, so the next person who opens that door is not guessing which breaker runs the fridge. Arc-fault and ground-fault protection wherever the code calls for it. A grounding electrode system built to current requirements rather than 1980s ones.
You also keep the load calculation, the permit paperwork, and a photo record of the work. If you sell the house in three years, that folder answers most of what a buyer's inspector will ask.
Questions we get asked on almost every estimate
Will my power be off all day? Usually not. The utility disconnect and reconnect bracket the work, and most of the time you are dark for four to six hours in the middle of a weekday.
Can you move the panel while you are at it? Often yes, and it is a good moment to do it. Panels in bedroom closets or behind doors no longer meet clearance rules. Relocating one during an upgrade solves a code problem and a daily annoyance at the same time.
Do I need to be home? Someone over eighteen should be there for the utility disconnect and for the inspection window. Beyond that, you can go to work.
Signs you should not wait on
A warm panel cover is not normal. Neither is a burning smell near the panel, a breaker that trips within seconds of resetting, or lights that dim every time the AC kicks on. Any of those means something inside is heating up.
Scorch marks around a breaker stab, rust on the bus, or a panel that hums under load are all reasons to call the same week rather than next quarter.
If you are simply planning ahead, that is easier. Electrical panel upgrades booked in advance get scheduled around your calendar instead of around an emergency.
