Level 1 versus Level 2, in plain numbers

Level 1 is the cord that came in the trunk. It plugs into a normal wall outlet and adds roughly three to five miles of range per hour. Overnight that is maybe forty miles. For a short commute it is genuinely fine.

Level 2 runs on 240 volts, the same as your dryer or your range. Depending on the charger and the car it adds something like twenty to forty miles per hour of charging. Most cars go from nearly empty to full overnight.

That difference is why almost every EV charging station installation we do is Level 2. It turns charging into something you stop thinking about.

What decides whether your panel can take it

A 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp circuit, and that circuit has to fit inside your existing service. We run a load calculation to find out. Plenty of houses have room. Plenty of older ones, especially 100-amp services from the 1970s, do not.

When the panel is full but the service is big enough, a subpanel or a breaker with a smaller footprint often solves it. When the service itself is too small, you are looking at a panel upgrade first.

There is also a middle path. Load management devices let a charger share capacity with the dryer or the AC, backing off automatically when the house is busy. That can avoid a service change entirely, and we will tell you when it is a reasonable option.

How the EV charging station installation runs

We confirm where the car parks and where you want the cable to reach. That sounds obvious, but garage layouts change once the charger is on the wall, and a cable that will not reach the port on the far side of the car is a daily irritation.

Then we pull the permit, run the circuit, mount the unit and terminate it. Most single-charger jobs finish in half a day when the panel is close to the garage. Long runs, attic routing or outdoor mounting add time.

Finally the inspector signs it off. We do not skip that step even when a customer offers to. An unpermitted 60-amp circuit is exactly the kind of thing that surfaces during a sale.

Hardwired or plug-in?

Plug-in chargers use a NEMA 14-50 receptacle and can be unplugged and taken with you. They are convenient, and Florida code allows them, but the receptacle itself becomes a wear item. Cheap ones overheat.

Hardwired units skip the connection point altogether. They also allow higher current, which matters if your car can accept 48 amps or more. For an outdoor installation we lean hardwired, because there is one less thing for salt air to corrode.

If you rent, or you expect to move within a couple of years, plug-in makes more sense. We fit an industrial-grade receptacle rather than the hardware-store version in that case.

Brands, and why we mostly do not care

We install Tesla Wall Connectors, ChargePoint, Emporia, Grizzl-E, Wallbox, Autel and whatever else you bring us. The wiring behind the unit is the same job.

Where brands do differ is in the software. Some handle scheduled charging and utility rate windows well. Others are simple and dumb in a way that never breaks. If you want a recommendation we will give you one, but we do not sell hardware, so we have nothing to push.

One practical note: a J1772 plug fits nearly every non-Tesla car, and adapters cover the rest. Buying for the car you own today rarely locks you out of the next one.

Condos, HOAs and shared garages

A lot of our South Florida work is in buildings rather than driveways. That changes the job. You usually need board approval, a metered feed so the right unit pays for the power, and sometimes a licensed engineer to sign off on the riser.

Florida law gives condominium owners a path to install charging at their own parking space, subject to insurance and installation requirements set by the association. We have been through that approval process many times and can supply the drawings and the certificate of insurance the board will ask for.

Where the charger should physically go

Cable length is the constraint nobody thinks about until the unit is on the wall. Most chargers ship with an eighteen or twenty-five foot cable, and it has to reach the car port with slack, not stretched across the hood.

Charge ports sit in different places on different cars. Front left on a Ford, rear left on a Tesla, front right on some Hyundai models. If you own two cars, or expect to change cars, mount toward the middle of the bay rather than optimizing for today.

Outdoors we mount high enough to stay clear of standing water and under cover where we can. South Florida rain arrives sideways, and a unit rated for weather still lasts longer when it is not sitting in it.

What it costs, and what changes the number

The charger itself is the part you control, and prices vary widely by brand and current rating. The installation cost is driven by distance and difficulty.

A charger on the garage wall directly opposite the panel is the cheap case. A charger in a detached garage across a paved driveway, fed from a panel on the far side of the house, is the expensive one, because that is trenching or core drilling.

Panel capacity is the wild card. If your service has room, the job stays simple. If it does not, budget for a panel upgrade as part of the same visit rather than as a surprise later.

Charging speed, and why yours may be lower than advertised

A charger cannot push more current than the car will accept. Some vehicles cap their onboard charger at 32 amps regardless of what you install, so a 48-amp unit will not make them any faster.

Circuit rating limits it too. Continuous loads are limited to eighty percent of the breaker, so a 50-amp circuit supports 40 amps of charging, not 50.

Cold does not matter much here, but heat can. On a very hot afternoon some units throttle slightly to protect their electronics. If you notice your car charging a little slower in August than in January, that is usually why, and it is not a fault.

Rebates, credits and the paperwork behind them

Incentives for home charging change often, and they come from several directions at once. Utilities sometimes run their own programs, federal credits come and go with legislation, and some employers and car manufacturers offer their own rebates on installation.

We are electricians, not tax advisers, so we will not tell you what you qualify for. What we will do is give you an itemised invoice that separates equipment from labor from permit fees, because most programs want that breakdown and a vague one-line receipt gets rejected.

We also supply the permit number and the passed inspection record. Several programs require proof that the work was permitted, which is another reason we do not cut that corner.
