How to tell which of these electrical services you actually need

Most people call about a symptom rather than a service, which is the right way round. Lights that dim when the air conditioning starts point at the service or the panel. A single dead outlet points at a device or a ground-fault reset.

Breakers tell you which fault you have by how they trip. Overload trips slowly under load. A short trips instantly. A ground fault trips the protective device rather than the breaker.

So describe what is happening rather than trying to name the job. We would rather diagnose it properly than sell you the category you guessed at.

Repair or replace?

Repair is nearly always the right first answer, and it is what we recommend most of the time. There is a point where it stops being sensible.

Three signals mark it. Breakers for your panel are no longer manufactured. The same circuit has failed more than twice in a year. Or the fault sits inside cable running through walls you would have to open anyway.

In those cases we lay out both numbers and let you decide with the full picture, rather than steering you toward the larger job.

What every one of these jobs has in common

A load calculation, wherever capacity is involved. It is the arithmetic behind panel work, chargers, generators and additions, and it replaces guesswork with a number.

A permit, wherever the code calls for one. We file it, book the inspection and close it out.

And photographs. We document what we find before we change it, which is useful to you later and keeps our estimates honest.

Pricing, and what actually moves it

Access drives cost more than almost anything else. A surface-mounted panel in a garage is cheaper to replace than a flush-mounted one in a finished wall, because somebody has to open and close the drywall.

Distance drives it on larger properties. Every foot between the panel, the meter and the equipment is trench, conduit and conductor.

Condition drives the rest. Aluminum branch circuits, missing grounds and double-tapped breakers all have to clear before an inspection passes, so we would rather show you those on the estimate than on inspection day.

Codes, and why they keep changing

Requirements have moved a long way in thirty years. Arc-fault protection now covers most living areas. Ground-fault protection covers kitchens, baths, garages, laundry and everything outdoors.

Circuit counts have gone up too. Kitchens need dedicated small-appliance circuits, bathrooms need their own, and laundry cannot share.

None of that makes an older house illegal. It does mean that once work is done in an area, that area comes up to current requirements rather than the ones in force when the house was built.

Working in occupied homes

Most of our work happens while people carry on living normally around it. We shut down only the circuit under work, and we tell you before anything goes dark.

Drop cloths go down under anything overhead, and covers go on shoes. That sounds minor, and it is what customers mention most often afterwards.

If you have pets, say so when you book. Open doors and unfamiliar people are how animals get out.

Commercial as well as residential

We hold a Florida electrical contractor licence covering both, and roughly a quarter of our work is commercial.

Tenant buildouts, restaurant equipment circuits, lighting retrofits and code corrections after a failed inspection are all normal for us.

We schedule around trading hours, keep refrigeration alive through any shutdown, and attend inspections rather than sending a schedule and hoping.

What to have ready when you call

A photo of the panel door with the cover on, and one with it off if you can do that safely. Between them those two pictures answer most of what we would otherwise drive out to look at.

The address, and whether the property is in a gated community or has an association. Approvals often run alongside the permit, and starting them together saves weeks.

And a plain description of the symptom, including when it started and whether anything changed around that time. That single detail shortens diagnosis more than anything else you can tell us.

Booking, scheduling and how fast we can be there

Same-week scheduling is normal for planned work across Palm Beach and St. Lucie County. Same-day is common for repairs.

Storm season is the exception. After a system crosses the state, everybody in the county calls at once and the queue lengthens for a while.

Anything involving heat, burning smells, sparking or water in electrical equipment jumps that queue regardless of when you called.

Panel work, and when it becomes urgent

A warm panel cover is not normal. Neither is a burning smell near the panel, a breaker that trips within seconds of resetting, or lights that dim every time the air conditioning starts.

Any of those means something inside is heating up, and heat is what turns a tired panel into a fire. Those calls get same-day attention.

Planning ahead is easier and cheaper. Panel work booked in advance gets scheduled around your calendar rather than around an emergency.

Generators, chargers and the capacity question behind both

Generators and car chargers look like different jobs and they run into the same wall: how much service does the house actually have?

A 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp circuit. A whole-house transfer switch needs the panel to accept one. Both start with a load calculation rather than a product choice.

Where the service is genuinely too small, we say so up front. Where load management can avoid a service change, we say that too, because it usually saves several thousand dollars.

Lighting, fans and the work people enjoy

Not everything we do is a safety problem. Recessed lighting, under-cabinet strips, dimmers, ceiling fans and landscape lighting make up a steady share of the schedule.

The two mistakes we correct most often are quantity and placement. A dozen recessed cans in a normal living room produces a lit box rather than a room anyone wants to sit in.

So we chalk positions and walk them with you before cutting anything. Ten minutes at that stage prevents the one mistake nobody can fix cheaply.

Inspections, and when they are worth paying for

Inspections earn their fee when you need documentation, when you are deciding about a property, or when you genuinely do not know what you have.

They are not the right first step if a breaker is tripping right now. That is a service call with a different goal, and we will say so on the phone.

Reports come with photographs and plain-language explanations, ranked by whether an item is unsafe now, will fail an insurer, or is simply dated. Those three categories negotiate very differently.

Surge protection, the cheapest thing on this list

Florida takes more lightning than any other state, and most surge damage is not a dramatic strike. Small events degrade electronics gradually until something fails on an ordinary Tuesday.

A panel-mounted device plus decent point-of-use strips covers both ends of the problem, and the whole thing usually costs less than one replaced air conditioning control board.

It is also the fastest job on this page. An hour at the panel, assuming the grounding behind it is sound, which we check first.

Aluminum wiring, and the proportionate answer

Houses wired between roughly 1965 and 1973 often have aluminum branch circuits, and a lot of Palm Beach County housing falls in that window.

Aluminum is not dangerous by itself. The problem sits at the connections, where the metal expands and contracts more than copper and eventually works loose.

That means a full rewire is often more than you need. Approved connectors with copper pigtails at every device address the connection problem directly, and for many houses that is the right call.

Emergency electrical services, and the honest tiering

We keep capacity open every day for calls that should not wait. Burning smells, warm panels, sparking and water inside electrical equipment all belong in that group.

Losing power to part of the house is urgent but usually not dangerous. A single dead outlet sits lower again, and we will tell you that rather than promising a window we cannot meet.

After a storm the mix changes. Damaged service masts and water in outdoor equipment dominate, and a damaged mast has to be repaired by a licensed contractor and inspected before the utility reconnects you.

Warranty, and what happens if something goes wrong

Our workmanship is warranted, and the equipment carries whatever the manufacturer offers on top of that. We register devices where registration matters, such as whole-home surge protectors, and hand you the paperwork.

If something we installed misbehaves, call us first rather than living with it. Most callbacks turn out to be five minutes of adjustment.

We keep records of what we installed at an address for two years, which shortens diagnosis considerably when somebody calls about a circuit we worked on eighteen months ago.
